Program Features:

This program provides two different types of blast analysis.

  1. External High Explosives

  2. Vent sizing for internal gas and dust explosions

External High Explosives:

The user inputs the explosive type, which uses an input of %TNT energy. The mass of the explosive is input as well as the distance to the target and the elevation.

The program includes a data base that lists several common explosives and their % TNT values.

The program outputs the time vs over pressure and reflected pressure values for pressure impact against the targets surface. This data may also be output to a text file for input into a structural analysis program, such as ANSYS.

The theory is based on “Explosive Shocks in Air”, 2nd Edition by Kinney & Graham.

Vent sizing for internal gas and dust explosions:

The user inputs the type of Gas or Dust, various structure dimensions, the number of desired vents and vent location information, the maximum desired internal pressure after venting and the pressure required to open the vents.

The program includes data bases for Gas, with the approximate burning velocity and maximum explosive pressure. The included data base for Dust includes approximate values for the deflagration index and maximum explosive pressures.

You can also enter information for the partial volume effect of the explosive. This is a case where the maximum volume of explosive in volume for gas or density for dust may be less than that which would generate the maximum explosive pressure.

The program will output the required total vent area and the area required for individual vents, if multiple vents are specified.

The theory is based on NFPA 68, 2018 “Standard on Explosion Protection by Deflagration Venting”.

The program will output warnings for any configuration that is outside the assumptions of NFPA 68.
